The Time to Adopt Your Pet Care Franchise is Now!

This week, the American Pet Products Association (a nonprofit pet industry association) announced a staggering statistic: Americans are spending more on pets than ever before! They found that pet care spending across the country had risen to a whopping $72 billion in 2018 from the considerable $69 billion in 2017. The millennial generation continues to increase the pet-owning demographic – and there doesn’t seem there are any signs of stopping.

If you’re unsure of the potential of working in the pet care industry, let the above fact clarify things for you. Pet care franchises are where many entrepreneurs are finding success, and now is the time to jump on the wagon! Pets are growing in popularity, and so is the concept that pets deserve the same level of quality in health and well-being as the rest of the family (as they should!).

Owning a pet boarding franchise is the best way to capitalize on this growing demand for quality pet service. At All American Pet Resorts, we have two primary goals:

1.    Provide pet owners and their pets with the highest quality care and service
2.    Assist our franchisees achieve the highest return on investment from their entrepreneurial dream

The requirements for operating your own pet care franchise are simple: you have to be willing to work hard, have a passion to work with animals, and be willing to work with your franchisor to achieve the common goal of business success! The franchise experience is definitely more complex once you’re fully on board, but those guiding principles make up the foundation for you to build upon!

Owning a pet care franchise isn’t for everyone, unfortunately. If you’re someone who doesn’t take kindly to a defined process and prefers to make snap decisions on your own, you may struggle to find success as a franchisee. The structured system of an established franchise is there for a reason. Your franchise development team are people that have done what you’ll be doing many times before, and they know what it takes to successfully get a pet care business up and running.

If you’re ready to join a continually growing market, the pet care industry is a great place to start. If you’re looking to latch on to an established franchise and grow a business using their strategy, All American Pet Resorts may be the partner you’re looking for!

4 Key Strategies for Pet Care Franchise Success

Nobody wants to run an unsuccessful business… This is why so many entrepreneurs seek franchise opportunities! For pet care companies especially, the ability to jump onto an established brand’s identity and business infrastructure offers an excellent opportunity for success. Be warned, however, this it does NOT guarantee success.

If you’re interested in owning your own pet care franchise, don’t make the same mistake that many have before by assuming the franchising opportunities are a guaranteed success. Making a business reach its full potential takes talent, dedication, and passion. At All American Pet Resorts, we love working with individuals that are as passionate about caring for pets as they are ready to work hard to grow the business.

In addition to having the drive necessary, there are strategies that we believe are key to obtaining franchise success. As franchisors, we love to see our franchisees achieve success, which is why we’re sharing the following strategies for your success:

Know Your Strengths, And How to Overcome Your Weaknesses

Besides the wealth of information and experience that your franchisor should have to offer you, your skills are your primary asset for running your franchise. It’s important to know where your strengths lie and where your shortcomings begin. If time management is typically an issue with you, be aware of this and develop a strategy to mitigate this. At AAPR, we help come up with a comprehensive schedule for the whole development process.

Keep your weaknesses in mind when hiring your staff, too! Hiring friendly, social team members will be a great strategy for franchise owners that are more introverted.

Follow the System

This is a tip that we can’t stress enough. Many franchisees don’t have a problem with following the franchise’s procedures during the development process of the company. Once things are up and running, however, new franchisees often try to make their own decisions and “wing it,” for a lack of a better phrase.

One of the first items that should be discussed before owning a franchise is the franchise agreement. This agreement establishes the expectation that the franchisee will adhere to the system, which is in place to preserve the brand and protect your investment. A good tip is to not jeopardize this by going off script or making decisions that go against the franchisor’s system. Franchises are often sold as a “tried-and-true” business model, but this goes out the window when you don’t abide by the system.

Recruit an Awesome Team

Part of the joys of working in the pet care industry is coming into contact with people who are just as passionate about pets as you are! When putting a team together for your franchise, make sure you recruit people who love pets and are willing to work hard to care for them. Putting together a great team can be the difference between a good franchise and a great one!

Once you have your great team together, make sure you work hard to keep them. Treat everybody with respect and equality and be sure to rotate undesirable tasks. Train your employees well and keep them updated with any promotions or events.

Get On the Same Page With Family/Friends

While we don’t want to scare you by any stretch, it is important to note how much time you will spend running your pet care facility. The decision to run a franchise will definitely impact your friends and family, so make sure that you make this decision with them in mind. Be sure to organize your time so you can secure family time while also maintaining your new franchise.

Success in the business world is never guaranteed, but we believe these four strategies will serve any new franchisee well in their new investment. For more information about how to join a growing market and run a successful pet care industry, visit the All American Pet Resorts website!

How to Properly Evaluate a Pet Care Franchise Opportunity

If you’ve read our past blogs, you know that we at All American Pet Resorts strive to provide franchisees with the information they need to succeed. A common thread through a few posts has highlighted the fact that you need to do your homework before jumping into something as time-consuming as owning a franchise. Considering just how big this decision is, it should be a no-brainer that you should carefully consider the opportunity at hand before coming to a conclusion.

Figuring out if owning a pet care franchise is right for you is much easier said than done. With so many different factors at play, it can be hard to know what a future pet facility owner should be looking for. That’s we’ve produced this blog – to answer the question: How does one properly evaluate a franchise opportunity?

Below are a series of questions that you should ask (and have an answer for) before jumping into a pet care franchise:

How much training and support is available, and will it be enough?

Clearly you have experience with or, at least, an appreciation of animals if you’re interested in owning your own pet care franchise. But it takes a lot more than knowing how to care for cats and dogs to properly run a pet care facility. You need to know that you have a support system to draw from in case you run into issues that you aren’t equipped to handle.

Most franchisors will offer training before letting you free into the wild, but make sure that you’re working with franchisors that will provide extensive training that will prepare you for all aspects of running a pet care business. At All American Pet Resorts, we help oversee all schedules from the start of development all the way to the opening day, decreasing as many surprises for the franchisee as possible!

Will I be happy and content over the long term?

Sure, pet care is a growing market and an excellent financial investment. But financial success alone shouldn’t be the primary motivator in your decision to operate a pet care company. You need to be prepared for the day-to-day responsibilities of the new job, as well as understand the overall challenges that are posed to franchise owners. Will this line of work be something that you can see doing for a long time? Successful franchises take years to grow and flourish, so make sure that you aren’t letting your short term aspirations fog your long-term thinking.

Do I believe in the service that the franchise network delivers?

The work of a franchisee is already difficult and challenging; don’t make it more challenging by choosing to work with a franchisor that you don’t believe in.  In life, you have to do things that you believe in, and this includes work, too. Make sure that you agree with the franchisor on what they do, and how they do it. It can be aggravating if you disagree, as franchisees are required to work within the framework that they invested into. Save yourself the stress by confirming that you agree with your franchisor’s mission and identity.

What can/will I do if I have to stop?

Life is unpredictable, and there may come a time where you will no longer be able to operate your pet care facility. Whether it’s because of a personal crisis or illness, it’s important to think a few steps ahead. Do you have someone to transfer or sell the business to in the event that you have to step down? Having an idea of that now will save you tons of headaches later.

Clearly there is a lot at play when jumping on board of a franchise, but the situation becomes far less daunting the more that you prepare. At AAPR, we’re grateful to have helped several pet care professionals establish their own pet care facility. We continue to see growth in our franchisees across the country, and look forward to continuing this growth in the New Year!
